Grassroots Game Conference: Games as Art
Monday, April 23, 2012 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (EDT)
The National Endowment for the Arts recently stated that it would accept Games as an Art Form. But what games are appropriately described as art? While any great classic (from Zelda to Starcraft) might fall into this category, for our purposes we’ll focus on exploring the intentional introduction of art concepts into gameplay. In Philadelphia, where we actually have a lot more successful artists than successful game developers, it seems that such analysis could provide meaningful value. This panel session will include Georgina Goodlander, coordinator of the groundbreaking exhibition The Art of Video Games at the Smithsonian Institute; Alyce Myatt, who serves as the Director for Media Arts at the National Endowment for the Arts; and Sarah Brin of GlitchLab LA.
Reception 5:30-6:00 in Conversation Hall (2nd Floor) and Panel in Mayor's Reception Room (2nd Floor) To enter the building, bring photo ID and use the NorthEast visitors portal, located on the Northeast corner of City Hall.
Co-sponsored by the City of Philadelphia, Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.
